Clean Fuel Cell Energy offers both five layer or three layer membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs). The five layer MEA consists of a proton exchange membrane (typically a Nafion© membrane), two platinum catalyst layers, and two diffusion backing layers (usually carbon cloth or carbon paper). The three layer MEA consists of the two catalyst layers coated onto a polymer membrane. The three layer MEA is often called a "catalyst coated membrane". The proton exchange membrane (PEM) is “sandwiched” between the two catalyst layers. The catalyst layers are either coated or sputtered onto the gas diffusion media (GDL). Clean Fuel Cell Energy offers custom membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) upon request. The information that needs to be provided for an accurate quote includes:

1) Type of backing material desired (carbon cloth is typically used)
2) The amount of catalyst loading. Our standard MEA uses Pt on Vulcan XC-72 Carbon catalyst (0.4 - 5 mg/cm2 is typically used).
3) Size of the active area (10 cm x 10 cm is typically used)
4) Type of membrane (Nafion 115 is typically used)
